Research - Mulvey's theory on representation

Mulvey's theory on representation

Laura Mulvey studied the representation of gender in music videos.

'In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between the active male and passive female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly' - Laura Mulvey,1992

Mulvey argues that women are frequently being objectified in music videos. Mulvey uses the term 'Male Gaze' to describe how women are sexualised to satisfy and entertain the male audiences needs. The music video is usually edited so that shots are focused on intimate parts of the female body, dismembering the female body. Costume wise females are often dressed in little to none provocative clothing. The 'Male Gaze' is usually found in genres Rap, Pop, R&B and Grime.

In the Tinie Tempah feat. 2 Chainz -Trampoline music video, many elements of the male gaze are used.

In these short clips the dancers are wearing tight costumes which look like lingerie and swim wear. The camera 'dismembers' the dancers only showing the mid section of their bodies, legs and lips individually rarely capturing the face.
